Kindred is a vibrant and heartfelt exploration of connection. One of the things I love about connection is that when it’s strong, whirl windy and impetuous, it’s hard to make sense of it. However, the more you commit to nurturing it and sometimes surrendering to it, you will soon find out why that thing or person keeps drawing you in. Kindred is all about that link.
With this body of work, I have gained a deeper understanding of the relationship between an artist and their muse. What’s needed is the foundation of trust, collaboration and mutual inspiration. Above these three, for me, is the space to laugh, chat, sing and dance. If you’ve had a chance to see behind the scenes footage of my muse, Fikayo and I, working on KINDRED, I’m sure you could sense the joy we felt as we created. Each portrait you see here is a testament to the connection we have nurtured over the past 7 months.
This exhibit embraces the beauty of contrasts. The prints and textures in these portraits may clash, but they do so in a way that is both striking and harmonious. It’s a celebration of how opposing elements can come together to create something truly extraordinary.
KINDRED is also a tribute to the cities that have been my creative sanctuaries. The grounding energy of Harare, Zimbabwe, the way I feel at home in Cape Town, South Africa and how Halifax, Canada has nurtured my creative journey and has led me to this moment. These places anchor me and have deeply influenced my work throughout the years.
KINDRED debuted on NOVEMBER 2nd, 2024
at The Prow Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia
for a one night only exhibit.
